Our Story

The TallShip Unicorn is a historic 110 foot steel hulled topsail schooner whose roots lead back to the German Navy during the height of the Second World War. Built from the hull and steel plates of a U-boat after this dark time in world history, the Unicorn began her civilian life in a Dutch shipyard as part of war reparations to Holland after Germany's defeat in 1945. Over the years she has been on many an adventure... From hunting in wolf packs with the German U-boat fleet, preying on allied shipping in the Atlantic, to her current status as home and employment through Airbnb to a service disabled US military veteran of Jewish descent, she has had a remarkable transformation and a unique story of redemption.  She was launched as a fishing vessel in 1947 and spent years fishing the stormy North Sea.  As a charter schooner, she has sailed around the world, visiting ports from Australia to Chicago. She has sailed under 5 flags, cruised the Mediterranean, salvaged treasure in the Caribbean, trained youths in Nova Scotia, raced the Chesapeake and reenacted battles from the war of 1812 on Lake Eerie. She is a fine vessel, and true, but she is in need of a goodly amount of TLC and attention to her bulwarks, decks rigging and fittings. She is a tough old girl, but even the toughest ship will succumb to the elements, the salt air and general harsh conditions of the marine environment. We have ripped out the old decaying deck and we're in the process of laying the new planks. When finished she will again sail as a charter vessel in the Chesapeake Bay. If you would like to take part and help revitalize the spirit of the Unicorn by assisting with her care and restoration, you can do so by making a purchase in the Ship's Store, or by donating to our cause at https://www.gofundme.com/GoodShipUnicorn.
